If you're interested in installing a floating wood floor, then an underlayment is necessary. Since floating wood floors are installed with a "free float" method where the wood is not actually attached to the sub-floor, it's necessary to install a floor muffler underlayment before the wood is laid down. The wood floor underlayment goes on over the sub-floor. In most cases, the wood floor can be applied to the floor muffler underlayment by glue or by locking the boards together in a glueless format.
